About the Corvette

The Chevrolet Corvette is a sports car that has been manufactured by General Motors since 1953 .From the start the outer body was made out of the then revolutionary fiberglass. Compared to the British and Italian sports cars of the day, the Corvette was underpowered and had poor brakes. GM was seriously considering shelving the Corvette and would have done so but for two important events. The first was the introduction in 1955 of Chevrolet's new 265CI V8 engine and the second was the influence of Zora Arkus-Duntov. who simply took the new V8 and backed it with a three-speed manual transmission turning the Corvette into a genuine performance car. There have been six generations of the Corvette so far, sometimes referred to as C1 through C6.

• C6 (2005-)

The third generation cars started production in 1968 and ended in 1982. In 1968 the "Sting Ray" name was not used, but returned in 1969 as a single word "Stingray".  In 1969, the 350 cu in (5.7 L) engine became available in the Corvette, and in 1970, the 427 big block was enlarged to 454 cu in (7.4 L). Power peaked in the 1970/1 models, with the LT-1 small block putting out 370 hp and the 454 big block having its last year of big power with 425 hp. Power declined after 1972 and bottomed out in 1975 below 200 hp.

Styling changed subtly over the generation. Minor trim changes occurred through the 1972 model. In 1973, the Corvette dropped the front chrome bumpers for a urethane bumper but kept the rear chrome bumpers. In 1974, the rear chrome bumpers became urethane as well.1975 saw the last year for the convertible, which did not return until 1986.
